Imagine you are responsible for a stadium that seats 105,000 people. The concrete is pouring, the cranes are moving, and suddenly, you realize the main pipes and electrical lines (MEP systems) are crashing directly into the building’s structural steel on the 12th floor.

What does that mistake cost you? A week of delays? A million dollars in rework?

This isn’t a hypothetical nightmare. For many developers, it’s a Tuesday. But for massive European projects like the renovation of FC Barcelona’s iconic Spotify Camp Nou Stadium, this nightmare never happened. Why?

Because we built the project twice. Once virtually, and once in reality.

The Camp Nou renovation was a massive job. The goal was to expand the stadium to 105,000 seats and build 14 floors (N00 through N90). The initial coordination work by previous contractors was not good enough, which delayed the fast schedule. The “invisible risk” was the almost certain chance of big delays caused by uncoordinated systems—especially the complex Fire Fighting, Electrical (MEP), and Water Supply systems for pump rooms.

To remove this threat, PSK BIM Service was involved as a specialized partner to deliver full, clash-free BIM Coordination Services in the tightest areas of the stadium. We didn’t just model the project; we fixed the design problems in the virtual world first, floor by floor.

The Invisible Risk Exposed, Level by Level

The real danger was in the stadium’s most important sections: the VIP areas, locker rooms, and technical hallways. These areas needed perfect precision because there was very little space above (only 2.2 to 2.7 meters of height). Here’s how the BIM Coordination Services stopped three potential costly problems in the completed floors (N00 to N45 Tier 2):

  • Challenge 1: The Tight VIP Spaces (N00 & N10): In the crowded VIP Tribuna section, large air ducts ran into the Fire Fighting and Electrical routes.
Our Solution: We changed the routes for these systems and suggested changes to the floor slabs to keep the necessary clearances.
  • Challenge 2: The Crowded Hallways (N20): Hallways were too full, forcing us to move essential fire and drainage pipes.
Our Solution: We successfully moved the main fire pipes through the toilet areas while still meeting all safety rules.
  • Challenge 3: The Low-Ceiling Beam Challenge (N30 & N35): The structural beams had changing clear heights (2.4m–2.5m), which interfered with the pipe and cable runs.
Our Solution: We used vertical pipes (risers) coming up from the N20 level to go around the beam problems entirely.

By using a detailed workflow—from processing 2D plans to creating exact shop drawings —we removed the invisible risk of construction clashes before a single pipe was ever cut on-site.

Our Detailed Coordination Process

Stopping the “invisible risk” on a complex renovation like Camp Nou required more than just modeling; it needed a careful, multi-step process.

Our process makes sure that every single pipe, cable tray, and light fixture is checked, approved, and guaranteed to be clash-free before the construction team gets the final drawing. This four-phase system protected the client, FC Barcelona, from expensive rework:

1. Initial Modelling & Fixing Clashes:
  • Starting Point: We took the 2D CAD designs from the Designer.
  • 3D Creation: Our team built complete 3D BIM models from these inputs.
  • The Important Step: We performed detailed clash detection and resolution, finding the best way to route all the systems.
2. Shop Drawing Creation:
  • Ready for Site: Once the model was clash-free, we produced precise Shop Drawings, ready for installation.
  • Details: These drawings included all necessary information for building and installing the parts.
3. Review and Approval Checks:

This step ensures everyone involved agrees on the final plan:

  • Designer Check: We sent the drawings to the original Designer, made the requested changes, and resubmitted them.
  • Consultant Approval: The updated drawings went to the Project Consultant, and we got final approval after addressing any extra comments.
4. Site Support and Changes:

Our work continues even after approval to help the team on the site:

  • On-Site Use: Approved drawings were given to the Construction Site Team to guide the initial installation.
  • Quick Changes: We receive daily requests from the site (email markups, reports) and quickly update the models to fix field conflicts or handle changes needed during construction.

Removing Risk and Building Trust

To deliver clash-free models for Camp Nou, we had to handle huge challenges, especially the fast timeline and problems from previous contractors.

To meet the deadlines, we quickly grew our team of coordination experts from 3 to 11 members within a month. This ability to scale fast, combined with our global experience in large projects, allowed us to manage the complex scope successfully.

Key Results and Value Delivered:
  • Problem-Solving: We quickly fixed design clashes and complicated space restrictions, like the tight overhead space in the VIP and technical corridors.
  • Design Fixes: Our team suggested and implemented changes to the design to make sure the systems could be built in real life.
  • Focus on the Client: We worked closely with FC Barcelona and the Project Consultant, helping us keep an exceptional client retention rate of over 98%.

By delivering coordinated, clash-free BIM models under high pressure, we made sure the MEP installations went smoothly across all completed levels.
